The Danse Society

A Mister Fantasy I ran for the first time in Danse Society when it was programmed video '2000 Light Years From Home '. As time has passed. Charles Massarini was my appointment on Tuesday 'between night and dawn. It was already the third or fourth year that aired on its program, the first of RAI to broadcast video of the new wave. That movie was a real shock, I remember pictures of candles, the outbreak of the big bang, the guitar played in front of a television set where the Stones appeared, the authors of the original song that appeared in 'Their Satanic Majesties Request', ླྀ years. To me it seemed harder version of Danse of the clanking original and suggestive. It did not seem just a remake but a real piece of Danse, it was so different. The words were the same but the music was enveloping, epic, evocative and just gave you the idea of a journey to the ends of the cosmos, perhaps one of those spaceships shaped rocket envisaged by science fiction writers of the 20s.
'The sun turns with grace,
Let's start with a fresh explosion
for a star with fiery oceans
that loneliness
to 100 light years from home
Red cold deserts dusk
energy everywhere
that loneliness
to 600 at home
that loneliness
1000 as from home
Flight 14
you can land
See you on Aldebaran
safely on the green desert sand "
It 's a reason that there is never tired of listening. At that time corresponded with several people, including a boy in the province of Mantua, which made me appreciate what lp recorded many audio tapes taken from his discography.
![]() | When I got 'Heaven Is Waiting', with the previous mini lp, the obscure and unmissable 'Seduction' and a couple of unusual, I was again struck. Already the introduction of cupissima 'Come Inside' I threw in another world, teasing the imagination. Certain sounds, the DS ... I've always associated with night scenes, to travel on the pack ice in submarines (listen to 'Dolphins') to' flights of nocturnal birds and other dark presence. |
The rattle of drums, guitar crystalline, low dark, the gusts of keyboards ... all this, once assembled, has the unmistakable sound of Danse Society, which were wrongly included in the vein of 'positive punk', alongside groups such as Death Cult or Sex Gang Children. The voice of Steve Rawlings is really wonderful and very different from those of many groups of darkwave.
Among the highlights of the album tracks that threw them to the general public, we find the rhythm
'Wake up', also released as a single:
'Alone in this place, here with you,
finally in front, only one fish more in the sea,
the weakness in me,
Wake Up!
Why not give me anything in return,
show me a lesson to learn
give me a day truce and I'll take you just
and I'll go
I wonder why when I listen to something by The Police. Indeed, certain sounds or bass and guitar can remember 'Walking on the Moon'. Later I learned that the album was produced by Nigel Gray (Regatta de Blanc, Juju, Kaleidoscope). The battery is truly explosive!
Perhaps the best is "The Night", which closes the album. The battery of Paul Gilmartin echoes the rhythms of 'All My Colours' Echo & The Bunnymen or certain pieces of 'Pornography', the guitar 'Garlands-style' by Paul Nash accompanying the relentless bass by Tim Wright, creating a warp on which the intervening liquid keyboards Lyndon Scarfe and naturally beautiful, unique, melancholy voice of Steve.
Steve Rawlings and Lyndon Scarfe already made up throwing lots of ideas, phrases and words, then tried to assemble these ideas on instrumental tracks. Did not write the words on purpose and then build on it a song.
Among the best pieces of flair to point out the long 'The Theme', the back of 'Somewhere', 1982. It 'mostly instrumental, but then Steve spoke with plaintive vocals.
Some years ago a new edition came out in CD 'Heaven is waiting' but unfortunately incomplete superb intro of 'Come inside'; luckily my reissue of the album goes back to the early ྖ and contains the entire song along with nine other LP of 1984 and also backs of singles and a new version of 'The Theme'.
At the time the disk had been a certain consensus. The late Alexander Calovolo on Rockerilla, had pulled out all his best vocabulary for praising the album, citing 'gold', 'heroin' and 'astart Syriac', but at the end of the year had not remembered to put it between the top ten rankings of its staff. A letter on Rockstar, another month of music, exalted 'Heaven Is Waiting' with words less polished and eventually signed with the fans 'Me and Robert Smith', as if to say that this album would have liked to fans of the Cure.
The band from Barnsley, a town situated between Sheffield and Leeds, had a momentary success, thanks precisely to that album, 'Heaven Is Waiting', released by BMG's Arista, then the next 'Looking Through' and single 'Say It again 'and' Hold On ', the music became softer, but without disfigurement. Then the group changed its name to 'The Society', released a single that was ignored and the story finally ended.
On youtube there are some interesting music videos, including one taken from the festivals 'Futurama' in 1980. Steve is dressed as a vampire and has straight hair. Note the look of its changes over the years, in the other video, to rock-hard Hold Hon
